Ropey Things is a Cape Town event brought to you by Desire Lines, which celebrates Shibari, the ancient Japanese art of erotic bondage. Come to learn from others, share your skills, or experience being tied up first hand. If you’d like to see event organiser, Astrid, in action, then check out this video portrait I made of her.

Shibari Andy Lund Desire Lines

  • Friday 27th January
  • 6pm – 9pm
  • Address given upon RSVP via Instagram @_desire_lines
  • R60 for venue hire
  • What we will be learning: safety, basic single and double column ties, decorative knots (bulk of the session) and then one hour of free tying.
  • Bring: rope, if you have. If you’re starting out and confused, cotton sash cord from Builder’s Warehouse works fine. Astrid will also have some extra lying around. Don’t forget to bring your own snacks and drinks.
  • House rules: no filming or photographing others without their explicit permission, this includes capturing people in the background. Consent is very important, so if you want to practice on someone you don’t know well, ask them for permission, and ask them if they have any restricted areas. Communicate with your bottom. If you’re confused about someone’s gender identity, ask them “what are your pronouns?” and use those pronouns. If someone makes you uncomfortable, speak to Astrid.
